How to Plan Your Podcast Before Recording Your First Episode

When the idea of starting a podcast comes to mind, it's usually exciting.

You've finally decided to do it. You start looking at microphones, recording software, and maybe even think about your first episode.

But here's something I've noticed after years of podcasting.

Many aspiring podcasters make the mistake of jumping straight into recording.

There's nothing wrong with that.

Buying a microphone is easy.

Recording your first episode is exciting.

But if you haven't planned your podcast, if you haven't created a simple structure for how it will work, staying consistent becomes much harder.

Before you hit record, here are five things I believe you should have in place.

1. Know Why You're Starting

Before anything else, ask yourself:

  • Why am I starting this podcast?
  • Who is this podcast for?
  • What do I want people to take away from each episode?

Having clear answers to these questions will guide every decision you make later.

2. Plan Your First Few Episodes

This is one piece of advice I give almost every aspiring podcaster.

Don't start with just one episode.

Plan several.

Recording a podcast isn't always easy, but it becomes much easier when you batch your recordings.

If you publish two episodes a month, try recording two months' worth of content.

If you publish weekly, aim to record your first four episodes before launching.

That way, you're not constantly wondering what to record next.

3. Create a Simple Workflow

Podcasting is more than recording.

Think about the entire process.

  • Planning
  • Recording
  • Editing
  • Publishing
  • Promotion

Having a simple workflow makes podcasting easier to manage and helps you stay consistent.

4. Choose Tools That Fit Your Needs

You don't need expensive equipment to start.

You also don't need the most expensive hosting platform.

Start with tools that fit your budget and support the way you want to work.

You can always upgrade later.

5. Prepare Before You Launch

Launching your podcast isn't the hardest part.

Staying consistent is.

A simple checklist helps you stay organised and ensures you don't miss important steps before your podcast goes live.

Planning before launching gives you a much better chance of building a podcast you can sustain.

If you'd like help putting this into practice — clarifying your podcast idea, defining your format, and building a launch plan — a Podcast Launch Strategy Session is a great next step. We'll work through the essentials together so you start with a clear direction.
